Pee Wee Black takes SNEHC Championship Title! Go Devils!

2014-03-08

North Devils 2, Newport 1

2014-03-07

The North Devils entered the Sunday SNEHC Championship game sporting an impressive 27-5-3 record. They would face a resilient team from Newport at the newly renovated rink at Providence College in the finale of a Championship Sunday that would determine the winner of both the Squirt A and Peewee A divisions.

During the first half of the game, the Newport squad was relentless, creating one good scoring chance after another, but North Devil goalie Christian Doneghey kept shutting the door. After two periods of exciting hockey, the game remained scoreless.

The deadlock was broken in the third when Jack Connolly stepped up and scored two goals, both of which were assisted by Zammiello and MacLellan.

Doneghey continued to frustrate the Whalers making sprawling save after save. It wasn’t until 1:20 left in the game that Newport broke through with a score and instantly gave their loyal fans a glimmer of hope.

With the Newport goalie pulled, and a face-off deep in the North Devils end, center Nick Gugliotta won a key draw which allowed the North Devils to clear the puck and preserve the 2-1 victory.

The North Devils will now go on and play in the Massachusetts State Championship Tournament while the Newport Whalers will represent Rhode Island at the New England Tier 2 Regional Tournament in Maine. Congratulations to both teams on a great season. Good luck in March, we know you’ll represent our league well.
