Hi Everyone,

You may soon notice games being added to your schedule for the Massachusetts State Playdowns. Many of you are already familiar with these games, but for our newer families, I understand this might be new territory.

I am sharing information below, which I hope provides a helpful overview, but to summarize, the Playdowns are a fun and exciting opportunity for the kids to play *more hockey*—which is exactly what most of them love!

Here are some key points:
• Schedule Updates - The seeding process was just completed, and the Playdowns need to begin quickly. As a result, games may be scheduled on short notice due to the tight timeframe and limited ice availability.
• Number of Games -  Depending on the division and number of participating teams, some teams may need to play only one game to advance to States, while others may require 2-3 games.
• Costs - Devils Hockey will cover the costs for Playdown games. However, if your team advances to the State Tournament (scheduled for March 21-23, 2025, at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough), there will be a tournament fee for that event.

For now, let’s focus on taking it one game at a time, having fun, and enjoying the experience. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to myself, your coach or your admin.  We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Massachusetts State Hockey Playdowns are a series of competitive youth hockey tournaments that determine which teams qualify to represent the state in regional or national competitions. They are organized by the Massachusetts Hockey Association, the governing body for amateur hockey in the state.

1. What are Playdowns?
The Playdowns are elimination-style tournaments where youth hockey teams from across Massachusetts compete within their divisions and age groups. These tournaments help identify the top teams eligible to advance to higher-level championships.
2. Purpose
The Playdowns serve as a qualifying round for the Massachusetts State Championships. It’s an opportunity for teams to showcase their skills against the best competition in the state.
3. Who Participates?
Teams affiliated with Massachusetts Hockey, spanning various skill levels and age groups (e.g., U10, U12, U14, etc.), are eligible to compete
4. Structure
• Teams play within their designated districts, which are based on geographic regions.
• Games are single-elimination or follow a round-robin format, depending on the age group and division.
• Winners from each district advance to the state tournament.
5. What It Means for Families
• Travel - Families should prepare for local travel during district rounds, and possibly statewide travel if the team advances.
• Commitment - Playdowns often require additional time, particularly for advancing teams.
• Excitement - These tournaments are high-energy events that foster team spirit and community support.
• Development - Competing at this level offers young athletes a chance to grow their skills and gain experience under pressure.

For families new to the Playdowns, it’s a great way to get involved, cheer on the team, and enjoy the camaraderie of the youth hockey community.

Thank you,
